A HISTORIC BUILDING

Built in 1924, this large adobe structure originally hosted the Herrera Supermarket (later MBS Supermarket) for decades. In the 1980s, the owners decided to expand their business and moved their operation to a different building downtown, using this original structure as a storage facility. It was later sold to a Marfa resident, an avid art and antiques collector who had dreamed of transforming the 8000 sqft of adobe into an art museum. After a new roof was installed in the early 2000s, he used the space to store some of his collections, though never opening the doors of his dreamed project. The Herrera building was put back on the market in 2019, ready to see new dreams flourish within its walls.

The Dreamers was founded in 2017 by Adèle Jancovici, a French curator and art publisher then leading contemporary art book and curatorial projects in Paris and New York. In 2020, she acquired the Herrera Building in downtown Presidio, with the desire to transform it into a large-scale exhibition space set in the desert. The building underwent a 5 year renovation, restoring some of its original features and uncovering many hidden and forgotten treasures in the process. Though renovation is still underway and the inauguration is set for the spring of 2026, The Dreamers opened its doors to the public in February 2025, showcasing a kaleidoscopic exhibition paying homage to the desert and its multitude of identities: “It Was The Desert Who Caught Me”.
